Iwokrama means "place of refuge" in indigenous language, the name is lent to the area by the mountain range to the north. The field station is on the shores of the mighty Essequibo, one of the four rivers surrounding the area. The huts have all the basic amenities and are often used by scientific groups and researchers and the predominantly Amerindian staff and wardens act as informative guides. Nature trails out from the field station enable you to learn about the most common tree varieties while excursions on the river to view petroglyphs or to climb Monkey Mountain with its awesome view down on to the trees of the canopy. Perhaps you would like to spend a night in a rainforest camp. Iwokrama is the perfect place to experience and learn some of the secrets of the rainforest.
